Materials: Handout -Guided Reading Questions
- Copy of the short story by the author (* Recommended 6th grade reading)
- Whiteboard and markers
- Theme graphic organizer
- Writing paper and pencils
Day 1: Introduction to Theme and Guided Reading
1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Introduce the concept of theme and define it as the underlying message or idea that the author wants to convey through the story.
- Ask students to share examples of themes they have encountered in previous readings.
2. Guided Reading (20 minutes)
- Read (* See recommended list) aloud to the class, stopping periodically to ask guided reading questions (see handout).
- Ask students to identify the characters, setting, and plot events (use the W's questions).
3. Discussion (20 minutes)
- After finishing the story, ask students to share their thoughts on the theme of the story.
- Use the whiteboard to create a graphic organizer to help students identify and organize their ideas about the theme.
Day 2: Analyzing Theme and Writing
1. Review and Analysis (20 minutes)
- Review the theme graphic organizer from the previous day.
- Ask students to provide textual evidence to support their analysis of the theme.
- Use the whiteboard to model how to write a clear and concise paragraph explaining the theme of the story.
2. Writing (30 minutes)
- Ask students to write a paragraph explaining the theme of "See recommended list".
- Encourage students to use textual evidence to support their analysis.
3. Conclusion (10 minutes)
- Allow students to share their paragraphs with a partner or the class.
- Discuss how theme is a universal message that can be applied to our own lives.
Assessment:
- Conduct observations on student participation during the discussion and writing activities.
- Revise student paragraphs for comprehension of theme and use of textual evidence.
- Assess student writing using a rubric to the clarity and precision.
Extension:
- Ask students to create a visual representation of the theme, such as a poster or infographic.
- Have students write a personal reflection on how the theme of the story relates to their own life.
Modification for Differentiated Instruction:
- For special needs readers, offer a graphic novel version of the story or a summary.
- For advanced readers, provide additional short stories with complex themes.
